Threshold Smudge Bundle

Every Sunseat session begins in sacred space, and sacred space must first be cleared. The Threshold Smudge Bundle is Hagatha Cudgelflower's prescribed preparatory practice: a hand-tied bundle of sustainably harvested white sage and palo santo wood, burned briefly at the start of each session to cleanse the energetic field of the ritual space and — as Hagatha teaches in the Fourth Principle — to clear the threshold itself of any residual energetic debris that might impede full solar reception. Hagatha added this step to her own protocol in 2019 and considers it the practice's most underappreciated preparation.

Each bundle contains three stems of California white sage and two chips of Peruvian palo santo, hand-tied with undyed cotton twine at our Sedona facility. The combined smoke carries a warm, resinous scent that practitioners report as grounding and focusing. The bundle is lit at the tip, waved gently through the ritual space for approximately ninety seconds, and extinguished in a ceramic dish or abalone shell (sold separately). The threshold smudge takes two minutes. Hagatha says it is the most important two minutes in the practice.

Bundles are dried for a minimum of three weeks at the Sedona facility before packaging, ensuring clean, even combustion with no excess moisture. They ship in a compostable kraft sleeve stamped with the Sunseat sun sigil and include a printed instruction card with Hagatha's own smudging guidance for practitioners new to the step. The white sage and palo santo are sustainably sourced in partnership with a women-led wild-harvest cooperative in San Luis Obispo County, certified under the Solstice Council's Ethical Harvest Standard.
